Nuclear power engineering at graduate studies - interview

Date: 16.03.2023

Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, as the first university in Poland, has launched a master's degree program in nuclear power engineering. Out of 30 places (this is the recruitment limit), 27 people were accepted. - There is no turning back from nuclear power. That's why specialists are needed to operate the power plants," said Dr. Andrzej Tatarek, a professor at the university and the head of the Division of Nuclear Power Engineering at the Deparment of Thermal Sciences, in an interview with Gazeta Wroclawska.

Wroclaw University of Sciene and Technology was planning to launch a specialization in nuclear energy earlier? However, there was a shortage of applicants. This time we succeeded.

We succeeded, we launched a master's degree program. Out of 30 places (that's the recruitment limit], we accepted 27 people. That's how many students, from the second semester, which started on February 28, are attending classes.
What's more, our postgraduate studies in nuclear energy are also in high demand. This academic year we launched the second editions and had twice as many applicants as places. We have seen a marked increase in interest in education in this field.
Previously, we offered undergraduate energy courses to students. Already in the 2014-2015 academic year we launched, once, an edition of a master's degree program, but it was not a major, but a specialization. Our graduates have found jobs in various places at home and abroad, such as in Korea, in the Korean nuclear industry.

To whom are the studies addressed, and who can apply?

We are mainly waiting for engineers, but also people with master's degrees. These can be graduates of mechanical, electrical, environmental engineering, electronics, but also automation or chemistry, as they will all find future employment in the big nuclear program. Our goal, during the three semesters of study, is to improve their competence. Knowledge will be taught to them during lectures, exercises, laboratories and internships.
